Marriage Counseling in Birmingham, AL
Specialist Help For Married Couples Ready to Reconnect, Rebuild Trust, and Build the Marriage They Hoped For.
Every marriage moves through hard seasons. Maybe the same argument keeps surfacing and never quite resolves. Maybe the two of you have drifted into living more like roommates than partners. Maybe something happened that shook the trust between you — or maybe your marriage is steady, and you simply want it to be stronger. Wherever you are, you don’t have to sort it out alone. At Insights Counseling Center, marriage counseling is one of the things we do best.
You Might Be Looking For Marriage Counseling Because…
Couples come to us at every stage. You may recognize your own marriage in one of these:
The same conflicts keep repeating, and conversations turn into fights — or into silence.
You feel more like roommates or co-parents than husband and wife.
Trust has been broken, and you’re not sure how to move forward together.
A major change — a new baby, a move, a loss, a career shift, an empty nest — has knocked you off balance.
One or both of you is quietly wondering whether to stay in the marriage.
Your marriage is good, and you want to protect and deepen it before small problems take root.
If any of that sounds familiar, you’re in the right place. Reaching out isn’t a sign your marriage has failed — it’s a sign you’re willing to fight for it.
A Team That Specializes in Marriages
Insights Counseling Center isn’t a general practice that also happens to see couples. Helping marriages is at the center of our work. Our marriage counselors hold advanced certifications in the approaches proven to strengthen marriages — including a Certified Gottman Therapist and a team trained in the research-based Gottman Method, along with training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and the Psychobiological Approach to Couple Therapy (PACT). Many of our therapists have also done their own marriage and recovery work, so they meet you with understanding rather than judgment.
You’ll find us in Birmingham, in comfortable, private offices, and we offer secure online sessions for married couples across Alabama.
How Marriage Counseling Works at Insights
When you reach out, we’ll learn a little about what’s bringing you in and help match you with the marriage counselor who’s the right fit. Early sessions focus on understanding your relationship — its history, its strengths, and the places it keeps getting stuck. From there, the work becomes practical: communication, conflict, trust, intimacy, and the everyday friendship a strong marriage is built on.
We usually recommend front-loading the work. If your counseling is likely to run a dozen sessions or so, it tends to go better to meet weekly for the first four to six weeks — building real momentum while everything is fresh — and then to space sessions further apart as things steady. For couples who want to move faster still, or who are traveling in to see us, couples intensives offer focused, in-depth work in a condensed format.
Either way, healing moves at your pace — our role is to bring the structure, the proven skills, and the steady, calm presence that helps both of you feel heard.

To Choose Connection In Your Marriage
Marriage Counseling Isn’t Only For Marriages In Crisis
Plenty of the couples we work with come to us not because something is broken, but because they want to keep their marriage strong. If your marriage is fundamentally good and you simply want to protect it — deepening your communication and connection before small frustrations take root — that’s a wise and worthwhile reason to begin, every bit as valuable as working through a harder season. And if you’re engaged or newly married, our premarital counseling helps you build a strong foundation from the very start. Wherever your marriage is today, investing in it is always time well spent.
If Your Marriage Is In A Harder Place
Marriage counseling is the right starting point for most couples. But some situations call for more specialized support, and we have dedicated paths for them:
Couples therapy — for couples in deeper, longstanding distress: stuck patterns, real disconnection, or hurt that everyday effort hasn’t resolved.
Affair and betrayal recovery — for couples healing after infidelity, an affair, or sexual betrayal.
Discernment counseling — for couples where one partner is considering divorce, and you need clarity before committing to the work of repair.
You don’t need to know which path is right before you reach out — we’ll help you find it together.
Fees and Insurance
Insights Counseling Center is a private-pay practice. We are not paneled with insurance providers — a choice that lets us focus fully on your marriage rather than on what a plan will authorize, and keeps what you share in the room private. Sessions range from $175 to $350, depending on each clinician’s level of specialized training and certification.
One thing worth knowing: most insurance plans do not cover marriage counseling, because it isn’t tied to a medical diagnosis. Some plans do offer partial coverage, so if that matters to you, it’s best to ask your provider directly. We’re glad to provide a superbill you can submit for any out-of-network reimbursement you may be eligible for.

Questions Couples Often Ask
Does marriage counseling really work?
It can — and the research is encouraging. Approaches like the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy have decades of study behind them. What matters most is engagement: couples who show up willing to do the work, even imperfectly, tend to see real change. We’ll be honest with you about what we see along the way.
How long does marriage counseling take?
It depends on what you’re working through. Some couples feel real movement in a few months; others stay longer to rebuild something deeper. Couples intensives can compress months of work into a focused few days. We’ll talk openly about timelines as we go.
What if my spouse won’t come?
Start anyway. It’s ideal when both partners attend, but meaningful work can begin with one person — and we can talk through how to invite a hesitant spouse during your consultation.
How much does marriage counseling cost in Birmingham?
Sessions at Insights range from $175 to $350, depending on the therapist’s training and certifications. We’re a private-pay practice and provide a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
Do you offer online marriage counseling?
Yes. We provide secure virtual sessions for married couples across Alabama, alongside in-person sessions in Birmingham.
What if we’re not sure our marriage can be saved?
That doubt is one of the most common places couples begin — and it doesn't mean your marriage is beyond help. Insights itself started here: more than 25 years ago, Tal and Teresa Prince rebuilt their own marriage, then added years of professional training and expertise to that hard-won experience. The marriage counseling we offer is intentional and structured — we use a clear framework to help you both regulate the overwhelm and engage the distance between you rather than avoid it. Many couples who were certain they'd tried everything have found their way back.
