Premarital Counseling in Birmingham, AL
Prepare For The Marriage, Not Just The Wedding Day — With Specialists Who Help Couples Start Strong.
You’re planning a wedding — and a marriage. The two aren’t the same thing. A wedding takes months of careful planning; a marriage lasts a lifetime, and most of us were never really taught how to do it well. Premarital counseling is how thoughtful couples get ready for the part that matters most — the years after the wedding day. At Insights Counseling Center, we help engaged and newly married couples build a foundation strong enough to last.
What Premarital Counseling Helps You Do
Premarital counseling gives the two of you dedicated time, and an experienced guide, to talk through the things that quietly shape a marriage — many of which never come up in the busyness of wedding planning. Together, you’ll explore:
Communication — how to be heard, and how to truly listen, especially when it’s hard.
Conflict — how to disagree well, repair quickly, and keep small things from becoming big ones.
Money — spending, saving, debt, and the expectations each of you brings.
Intimacy — building closeness, and learning to talk openly about a tender subject.
Family and in-laws — boundaries, traditions, and the families you each come from.
Roles and expectations — the unspoken assumptions about how married life “should” work.
Hopes for the future — children, careers, faith, and the life you want to build together.
The goal isn’t to find problems. It’s to give you a shared language and a set of skills before you need them — so the patterns you build from day one are healthy ones.
Begin With A Proven Premarital Assessment
Many of our premarital couples begin with a research-based relationship assessment — a structured way to see your relationship clearly before you build on it. We offer two of the most trusted: Prepare/Enrich and SYMBIS (Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts). You’ll each complete the assessment separately, and it maps your relationship in detail — your strengths as a couple, the areas worth growing, and the dynamics you may not have noticed yourselves. Your counselor then walks you through the results together, turning them into honest, encouraging conversation. Tal Prince and Samantha Scott are trained Prepare/Enrich facilitators, and Teresa Prince is a certified SYMBIS facilitator — so we can match you with the assessment and the counselor that fit you best.
A Team That Specializes In Couples
Insights Counseling Center is built around relationship work. Our couples specialists hold advanced certifications in the approaches proven to strengthen marriages — including Certified Gottman Therapists trained in the research-based Gottman Method, Prepare/Enrich and SYMBIS facilitators, and training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and the Psychobiological Approach to Couple Therapy (PACT). You’ll work with someone who does this every day — not a generalist for whom premarital work is an afterthought.
We see couples in person in Birmingham and offer secure online sessions for couples across Alabama.
How Premarital Counseling Works
When you reach out, we’ll learn about you as a couple and match you with the right counselor. From there, premarital counseling is usually a focused series of sessions — often built around your Prepare/Enrich or SYMBIS results and the topics most relevant to you. We’ll recommend the right number of sessions for your situation, and we can work with your timeline, including coordinating with your wedding date or an officiant’s requirements.

Christian Premarital Counseling — and A Welcome For Every Couple
Many of the couples who come to us for premarital counseling have a faith background, and a number are sent by a pastor, priest, or officiant. If you’d like your faith and shared values woven into the work, we’re glad to offer Christian premarital counseling and to coordinate with your church or officiant. It’s an option, never a requirement — we’re equally at home walking alongside couples who’d rather keep faith out of it. Wherever you’re coming from, the goal is the same: a marriage that’s ready for real life.
Already Married? It’s Not Too Late To Start Strong.
Premarital counseling is at its best before the wedding, but the first years of marriage are still a wonderful time to build good habits — and newly married couples benefit just as much. If you’re further along, or working through something harder, our marriage counseling is designed for exactly that.
Fees and Insurance
Insights Counseling Center is a private-pay practice. We are not paneled with insurance providers, which lets us focus fully on you as a couple. Sessions range from $175 to $350, depending on each clinician’s level of specialized training and certification. We’ll talk through the recommended number of sessions in your free consultation, so you know what to expect.
One note on insurance: most plans do not cover premarital or couples counseling, because it isn’t tied to a medical diagnosis. If coverage matters to you, it’s best to ask your provider directly. We’re glad to provide a superbill for any out-of-network reimbursement you may be eligible for.

Common Questions About Premarital Counseling
How many premarital counseling sessions will we need?
It varies by couple. Premarital counseling is usually a focused, short series of sessions rather than open-ended therapy. After your consultation, we’ll recommend a number that fits where you are and what you want to cover.
Do we have to be religious to come?
Not at all. We work with couples of every background and belief. If you’re marrying in a faith tradition, we’re glad to honor that; if you’re not, premarital counseling is just as valuable.
Do you offer Christian premarital counseling?
Yes. If you’d like a faith-integrated approach, we’re glad to offer Christian premarital counseling and to coordinate with your church or officiant. It’s always an option rather than an expectation — many of our couples choose it, and many don’t.
How far in advance of the wedding should we start?
Sooner is better — ideally a few months before the wedding, so you have time to work through the material without the crunch of final wedding planning. That said, it’s never too late to start, and we can work with your timeline.
What are Prepare/Enrich and SYMBIS?
They are two of the most trusted research-based premarital assessments. Each is completed separately by both partners, highlights your strengths and the areas worth growing, and gives your counselor a clear, personalized map for your sessions. We’ll help you choose the one that fits you best.
How much does premarital counseling cost?
Sessions range from $175 to $350 depending on the counselor. We’re a private-pay practice and provide a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
Do you offer online premarital counseling?
Yes — we provide secure virtual sessions for couples across Alabama, as well as in-person sessions in Birmingham.
